Goodbye Kitty
Cut for maudlin blather

Today we had Chloe euthanized. She had a good weekend with us, after we gave her some medications we got on Friday, a painkiller and prednisone. She was alert, eating, and present, and spent hours sitting in a sunny window with baxter, watching birds and cats outside. she slept right next to our heads for two nights. Yesterday morning, it was all different. She never moved off the bed of her own volition, and her eyes were very far away. She drank water when i carried her to the water dish, but never even looked in the direction of the food. I knew it was time. The vet came right to the house. It was as untraumatic as we could make it. I'm very relieved, but feeling a bit stunned. Baxter will need lots of snuggling.

No ordinary red-eye for this girl!

This is a nice picture of Baxter, showing his pretty golden-orange eye color

Oh, I'm so sorry you had to go thru that. I have a 20 year old cat and I hope I'm strong enough to do that when the time comes.

Well, I happily learned from an experience that i never want to put an animal through again, with my former kitty, Morganna, who was 19 years and about 3 months. we put it off, even though she was obviously failing over the course of a couple of months, because she still seemed to really want to be with us. We ended up sitting up with her one night until 4 a.m. while she had seizures before she finally left us. My guilt over this was horrible! It's so hard to be objective about it when an animal has been in your life for so long. It was easier to do this with Chloe, but much more of a shock because we only got her and Baxter last June. This wasn't supposed to happen for years! I wonder if maybe i had karma here, a chance to get it right this time, not in a judgemental sense that there's a "right" and "wrong" way to handle this situation, but rather an opportunity to take care of it in a way that I can feel good about how i handled it. And i do, actually. She had a good life here with a good kitty companion, and very little real suffering at the end.

Good luck to you and your kitty - 20 years is an impressive age! =^oo^=

That's so sad that you only got to have her such a short time, but I definitely understand. I think it's wonderful that the vet came to your house. As for my ancient kitty, she just keeps tottering along like the Queen Mum used to. She's mostly Persian and they seem to have pretty long life-spans. I figure as long as she's eating and walking and bathing and seems happy, no problem, but I do keep an eye on her to make sure she's OK.
